Independent auto-glass installers are hailing the passage of a bill that prohibits car-insurance agencies from directing clients toward preferred glass vendors. The legislation, which passed last year in the state House and unanimously passed the Senate on Thursday, could stop what glass installers call an unfair practice that has threatened their businesses in recent years.

A federal appeals court on Thursday refused to approve a class-action settlement over alleged defective sunroofs on several Volkswagen and Audi models but proposed a fix that could revive the nationwide accord. Owners claimed that sunroofs on roughly 3 million vehicles from the 1997 to 2009 model years could allow rainwater to leak inside when they were clogged by plant debris and pollen.

Edmonton firefighters fought an early morning blaze Thursday at a south-side auto-glass business. Crews responded to All-Star Glass on 58 Avenue and 99 Street around 4:30 a.m.. Crews quickly got the fire under control but traffic was rerouted in the area until around 6:30 a.m.

The Boyd Group Inc. on Thursday announced the acquisition of Advanced Collision Solutions, a collision repair facility based in Spring Grove, Ill. The 10,000-square-foot facility will operate under the Gerber Collision and Glass trade name.
